Stewart's Chase Hopes May Hinge On AdvoCare 500

Monday, August 22, 2011

One Labor Day Weekend ago, Tony Stewart cashed in with his victory under the lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Emory Healthcare 500. Now, with night racing’s return to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day Weekend closing fast, Stewart may need a repeat performance is he is to qualify for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase for the Championship.

As far as making it into NASCAR’s playoff format, Stewart currently finds himself in a precarious position. He is 10th in the points standings, just 24 ahead of Clint Bowyer and 52 points ahead of Brad Keselowski.

With such a small margin for error, a victory in one of the final three races prior to the Chase could go a long way in locking Stewart into The Chase. A win could also give Stewart a safety net if he were to fall outside the top ten.

Two wild card spots will be awarded to drivers ranked 11-20 in the points standings with the most victories. Currently, Brad Keselowski has two wins with Denny Hamlin, David Ragan and Paul Menard each having a victory. If multiple drivers are tied for a wild card spot, points position would be the tiebreaker.

Either way, the AdvoCare 500 could clinch or end Tony Stewart’s hopes of qualifying for The Chase, and it’ll add to the drama and excitement that is Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway!
