So how much buzz was built up by how Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway ended? Consider the following. Kyle Busch won a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race for the first time since last April, Dale Earnhardt Jr. needed only a few late-race laps to pick up about 15 positions and Earnhardt, Jr. is now the points leader.

All of that, however, was greatly overshadowed by the fashion in which Sunday’s race ended, with Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano wrecking one another coming to the checkered flag and Kyle Busch getting by to take the win.

Kasey Kahne figured out the best way to put coming close to a victory behind him. By winning the very next race. Kahne picked up his first victory of the season on Sunday at Bristol, moving to the lead with 39 laps to go and pulling away from Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski to pick up the win.

Transitions can be an x-factor in racing. Sometimes, a new combination between a driver, a new team or crew chief can cause some growing pains. But in other cases, things get up to speed in a hurry. You can count Matt Kenseth in the latter of those two.

After running strong in the first two races of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Kenseth found his way to victory lane on Sunday at Las Vegas, leading 42 laps, including the final 40 circuits to take the win.

Sometimes, drivers start slow coming off a big championship run. Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards were slow out of the gate last year, and Edwards didn’t win a race the entire year. But if drivers are supposed to start slow following a championship run, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson didn’t get the memo.

Johnson has finished first and second in the season’s first two races, with Keselowski finishing third twice already.

Fond Memories For Edwards

Saturday, September 3, 2011

"See that trophy? We stole it tonight, but I'll take it any way we can get it. Jeff and all the guys worked hard. We got back up to sixth place after that pit stop, they did an awesome job in the pits. I got back restarted about three laps into the run, and I said, 'Man this thing's tight. What did you do to it, Jeff?' and he said 'All the tape blew off'. You'd be amazed what a piece of tape does on the front of a truck at Atlanta Motor Speedway to make it tight or loose. Came back in, put more tape on it, pulled a spring rubber out. We had a really, really good ARMOUR Chevrolet. Then we stole it from there." Continue...

A few weeks ago, mere hours prior to a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event, Jimmie Johnson appeared at a “Tweet-up,” an in-person gathering of fans who communicate with one another on Twitter. Johnson making himself that accessible to fans casts a bright light on one of the many enhancements to the fan experience that only comes by being at the track.

Sure, you can crank up the surround sound on your TV at home or keep up with the action on your computer, but nothing replaces the atmosphere and electricity of simply being at the track. Driver appearances are but one of many parts of Labor Day Weekend that fans can only experience by being at the track.

These drivers are the best of the best drivers in the entire world and the heroes of so many fans. For the ordinary fan, it’s not likely that you’ll meet Peyton Manning before an Indianapolis Colts game or LeBron James before an NBA game. But it’s not uncommon to see NASCAR drivers in the midst of the Fan Zone area just hours before their strap in for 500 miles of white-knuckled racing.

During race weekend, as an exclusive offer to our Club One customers, we’ll have some of NASCAR’s top drivers visiting for intimate Q&As. And they’ll be there within hours of hitting the track for either practice or a race, which means racing will be weighing heavily on their minds when they’ll be visiting with fans!

It's not hard these days to get excited about night racing's return to Atlanta Motor Speedway. With one quick look at all that has happened during the past two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, there has been no shortage of excitement, both on and off the track. That excitement is largely fueled by one thing - night racing. One of the things that separates night racing from races run during the daytime is the potential for hot tempers among drivers. We've seen it the past two races, first with Ryan Newman and Juan Pablo Montoya and now with Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. In each instance, we've had moments of high emotion which have given fans plenty to talk about.

For most of us, there are moments when we’re younger which play a big part in shaping who we are later in life. One of those times for me came when I was about 11 years old. On my first visit to a NASCAR track, I received a fast and rousing introduction to stock car racing. When I entered the grandstand, the first stop was not to our seats to watch final practice – it was right next to the catch fence, where I received a rather vivid idea of how fast and loud stock cars are.

But as loud as it was that day, that moment helped birth a passion for racing that’s still burning pretty strong today. That’s exactly what we have in mind at AMS with our NASCAR Fans of Tomorrow promotion for Labor Day Weekend!

During the past few years, night racing has become woven into the fabric of Atlanta Motor Speedway with the Labor Day Weekend of NASCAR Night Racing. After all, who doesn’t love some night racing? But there’s been one thing missing the past two Labor Day Weekends in Atlanta, something adored by a sizeable number of fans – racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series under the lights. But this year, after a brief hiatus, truck racing is back under the lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway, giving fans the opportunity to see three NASCAR night races in a single weekend!

Needless to say, there’s no shortage of speed when it comes to Atlanta Motor Speedway. With a NASCAR qualifying record of more than 197 mph and with average speeds approaching the 190 mph mark with NASCAR drivers on the racetrack, going fast is critical for any driver to have a chance to win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day Weekend when NASCAR night racing makes its return to Atlanta.

But of all the parts of Atlanta’s fast surface which allows thrilling racing in multiple grooves, the end of the backstretch entering turn three may be the fastest.

As part of my job of handling the social media efforts at Atlanta Motor Speedway, one of the best things about race weekend for me is getting to know some of the many race fans that spend Labor Day weekend with us here at the track! While a good number of fans I encounter are on our Facebook and Twitter pages, there are others in the grandstands and in what is the second home for some fans – the campgrounds at AMS.

Whether you are camping in an RV, tent or pop-up camper or residing at your infield spot or are in one of our many campgrounds outside the racetrack, there are few experiences in racing as fun or enjoyable as camping at AMS!

There’s an old racing superstition about the color green in NASCAR, that if your racecar is green, it’s certain to bring you or your race team bad luck. So as it usually is during this time of year, the color green is more visible with it being close to St. Patrick’s Day.

But when it came to Bobby Labonte, even an old racing tale couldn’t stop him and his green-colored car, the No. 18 Interstate Batteries machine out of the Joe Gibbs Racing stable, from dominating at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Labonte, the 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion, has won six times at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the most of any active driver.

Each NASCAR race weekend, it takes an army to put on the show for the fans. We grow from a staff of around 60 full-time employees to 5,000 during Labor Day weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. At our sister SMI tracks, it is no different. I work in the Promotions department at AMS and each race weekend, we bring in one of our sister tracks full-time personnel to help out on our race weekend. Well, during the first weekend of March, it was my turn to be the exchange worker, as I was scheduled to help out on the NASCAR weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On the heels of Trevor Bayne's stunning win in the Daytona 500, the iconic No. 21 Wood Brothers car is once again the talk of the NASCAR world. Back in 1973, the No. 21 snatched the headlines at Atlanta, with David Pearson sweeping both of the season's races.

The sweep of both 1973 races at Atlanta puts Pearson among elite company as just five drivers have swept both races in a single season at AMS. But to accomplish the sweep, Pearson had to outduel another NASCAR legend not once, but twice in 1973 – Cale Yarborough. Continue...

There are a few givens at Atlanta Motor Speedway: It's going to be fast, it's going to have a lot of racing lines, and there's a good chance for a photo finish. But Jeff Burton said Saturday that Atlanta Motor Speedway also has a couple of factors that are always changing. "This race track has a bigger split personality from qualifying to racing of anywhere we go," Burton said. "Qualifying is so fast, crazy fast. And then you get 20 laps into the race and you're like 'my God, you cannot believe how slow it gets.' To me, that's what's fun about it. Because the track is so slick, small changes make a big difference in how the car drives."

Growing up, many of us have experiences that we credit as being a spark in getting us hooked on being passionate about something. For some its a first Major League Baseball game or having a game of catch in the front yard.

But for me, it came in the summer of 1990. Other than driving by a track a few times, I had never been to a NASCAR race. During the time, me and my family lived in Central Florida (I was 10-years old at the time) and it was a short drive to Daytona. So, we headed over to the track the day before the Firecracker 400 for second-round qualifying and final practice.

While I remember how exciting it was to see drivers such as Earnhardt and Waltrip barrel around the track in-person for the first time, the more vivid memory for me was the instant we stepped through the gates and my dad promptly took me up to the catch fence so I could 'see how loud these cars are.'

I still have memories of a sound so loud that it almost pushed me back away from the fence while seeing the blur of a black No. 3 car while also thinking it was cool that I could see the rear bumper lettering on Earnhardt's car that I had seen in pictures or on tv so many times.

From that moment on, I became passionate about racing.

And that, folks, is the great thing about the NASCAR Fan of Tomorrow special being offered by Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Nationwide Series Degree V12 300 and Sprint Cup qualifying on Sept 5. Kids 12 and under get in free with an adult ticket to the Earnhardt Grandstand.

You can introduce a youngster to racing or just come to the track to just enjoy some time together as a family for a great price! This is a great opportunity, so don't pass it up!

For tickets, call 877-9-AMS-TIX or go to Atlanta Motor Speedway's Web site.

The summer coming to a close is marked by many things, one being Thursday Thunder at Atlanta Motor Speedway coming to a close.

This week will likely be pivotal for many drivers hoping to either solidify their position in the standings or align themselves to make a final charge on Championship Night on Aug. 6.

In the Bandits Division, Kyle Weatherman holds a 17-point lead over John Holleman with Skip Nichols' lead in the Masters Division ahead of Jeff Haynie being a slim two points.  Luke Benhke leads the Outlaws by three points ahead of Garrett Smithley while Austin Hill holds a 34-point lead over Zach Kittle in the Pro Division. Chris Cable is 11 points ahead of Adam Gay in the Roadsters and Jonathan Chandler is three points ahead of Cody Haskins in Semi-Pro.

Evan Bell leads Joey Padgett by 10 points in Young Guns with the Young Lions points leader being Chad Finchum, 22 ahead of Donald McIntosh.
