On five separate occasions in his storied NASCAR career, Bobby Allison visited Victory Lane at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Allison's first Atlanta win, in the 1970 Atlanta 500, came on a day that saw other drivers dominate the before Allison surged into the lead when it counted to pick up the win, in his Dodge sponsored by Coca-Cola. Allison picked up the victory after qualifying ninth. In fact, Allison, who led twice for seven laps, didn't lead until less than 10 laps remained.

Up until that point, three drivers leading more than 80 laps in the 328-lap event – Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker and Allison's brother, Donnie Allison, dominated the proceedings. Of the three drivers, however, just one was running at the finish with both Baker and Donnie Allison exiting early with engine failure. Donnie Allison's engine expired with just 11 laps to go and he was credited with finishing seventh while Baker's problems came with 65 laps to go, dropping him back deep in the field.

But Allison still had to contend to Yarborough, who led a race-best 129 laps and also qualified on the pole position. With Yarborough leading, the two exchanged the lead with Allison taking the top spot for a lap with eight laps remaining before relinquishing it back for two laps. That set the stage for the race-winning pass, as Allison moved into the lead for good with five laps to go and never looked back, holding off Yarborough by an estimated distance of 50 feet.

Pete Hamilton finished third ahead of Lee Roy Yarbrough and Richard Petty.

It would be the first of three wins in 1970 for Allison, who went on to finish second in the points standings to Bobby Isaac at season's end.

For his career, at Atlanta, Allison put together two streaks of remarkable success at Atlanta, having two separate strings of six races in which he finished in the top ten in six consecutive races at Atlanta. His five Atlanta victories were separated by 12 seasons, with his final Atlanta win coming in 1982.

Without question, Allison's win brings up fond memories for fans of Allison and the famed 'Alabama Gang.' More great memories for you are in store here on Labor Day weekend when NASCAR Night Racing returns to Atlanta in the Biggest Labor Day Party in the USA!
