Atlanta 500 Weekend Early Season Key to Championship
Monday, December 16, 2002
The fastest track on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit will heat up again in just a few months, as stock car racing's biggest stars return to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the March 7-9 Atlanta 500 weekend.
Known for its exciting photo-finishes and breathtaking passes, the Atlanta 500 weekend promises to be another weekend of speed and exhilaration. Defending race and series winner Tony Stewart will try to defend his title, as 42 other hungry drivers will try to go down in history at Atlanta.
The weekend kicks off Friday, March 7, with Georgia Power Qualifying, as NASCAR's fastest drivers try to top the six-year-old track record of 197.478 mph, set by Geoffrey Bodine. Saturday will heat up with the ARCA 400 race, one of the longest races of the year for these up-and-coming drivers. The weekend will culminate with Sunday's Atlanta 500, when the Winston Cup drivers will try once again to tame the high banks of the 1.54-mile quad-oval.
