Ryan Newman will start from the pole in Sunday¿s Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500, setting the pace with a lap of 28.963 seconds (191.417 mph) during Friday¿s Georgia Power Qualifying Day at Atlanta Motor Speedway. ¿It¿s great to win a pole anywhere, but we¿ve been really close here,¿ Newman said. Despite having just one full year of NASCAR Winston Cup racing under his belt, Friday¿s pole position was Newman¿s eighth. It was his first at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Winston Cup series, although he captured his first pole at Atlanta two years ago, qualifying in front for the Aaron¿s 312. Newman¿s speed of 191.661 shattered the old Busch Series record and still stands today. Last spring, Newman sat on the pole for much of the qualifying session, only to be bumped by Dawsonville¿s Bill Elliott. This year, Newman¿s time stood, and Elliott¿s best lap of 28.991 seconds (191.232 mph) was just good enough for second this time. ¿It¿s ironic ¿ it¿s doesn¿t make it sweeter to beat Bill,¿ Newman said. ¿We¿re out there to beat everybody.¿ Elliott Sadler will start third, with five-time Atlanta winner Bobby Labonte and Jimmy Spencer rounding out the top 5.
