NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Michael Waltrip led the speed chart Tuesday at Atlanta Motor Speedway as three drivers and teams prepared for the Oct. 24-26 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 weekend.
Driving the No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Waltrip was caught on the unofficial stopwatches at an average speed of 191.701 mph (28.92 seconds) around the 1.54-mile superspeedway. Waltrip also clocked a competitive lap in his No. 99 Aaron¿s Dream Machine, turning a lap in 30.44 seconds (182.129 mph), since he will be doing double duty at Atlanta, running both the Oct. 25 Aaron¿s 312 Busch race and the Oct. 26 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.
"We¿ve been testing both cars, trying to find some speed - and we found it," Waltrip said. "We made a qualifying run in the 15 car, and we were running 207 (mph) into the corner. This track has tons of speed, and come race day, there will be tons of action and lots of passing."
Georgia native Buckshot Jones also turned laps Tuesday, trying to get comfortable in his No. 00 Aaron¿s Dream Machine Chevrolet. Jones, driving a car owned by Waltrip, will attempt to make the Oct. 26 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 Winston Cup race.
"It¿s been a tough test today," Jones said. "I can¿t find anything at all that I¿m comfortable with. This new body style has changed how the car handles, and I just can¿t find a comfort zone. But we¿ll keep working. I really want to be in this race here in Atlanta, my home track, and a track that I really like."
Busch Series title contender David Green had the second fastest time of the day at 183.333 mph (30.24 seconds) in the No. 37 Brewco Motorsports Pontiac.
