Winston Cup Series driver Ward Burton spent a second day testing at Atlanta Motor Speedway, preparing for his inaugural run in the No. 0 Netzero HiSpeed Pontiac for the Oct. 26 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.
After turning his first laps in the car Tuesday, Burton and his new crew spent Wednesday looking for more speed. They found it, gaining .35 of a second to turn a fast lap Wednesday in 29.48 seconds, or 188.060 mph.
"(Crew Chief) Tony Furr and the guys worked late in the garage last night, and we¿re really shaping up now," Burton said. "It¿s taken a lot of work, but this team¿s coming together pretty quickly. We had a real good feel all morning. We¿re making a lot of progress every time we go out on the track now."
Burton began the season with Bill Davis Racing but was announced this week as the new full-time driver for Haas Carter¿s No. 0 machine, beginning with the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
"It¿s going to be good for me, working from where we started with this team," Burton said. "It¿s going to be good going from the ground up, being a part of this team¿s success. We¿re improving every lap we make."
Busch Series driver Mike Bliss also continued to test on Wednesday, besting his Tuesday speeds by almost five miles an hour. His fastest lap was clocked at 186.353 mph (29.75 seconds).
