A statement from Ed Clark, president and general manager of Atlanta Motor Speedway, regarding NASCAR's points changes and new system for determining the NEXTEL Cup champion: "I salute Brian France and NASCAR for taking the bold step they've taken with their 'Chase for the Championship.' This late-season drama and excitement will attract much more interest from the casual fan. It will take NASCAR to a new level, so that one day people will look back and say today's announcement elevated the international perception of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing. "With today's announcement, conservative racing in the fall has been eliminated. Every lap of each of the final 10 races, including the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 here in Atlanta, will be critical. The drama and intensity in the garage and on the track will be higher than we've ever seen before in the final races. Wins are critical, and hard-nosed racing for the championship is back."
