Racers Battle for Record $5.1 Million for Golden Corral 500
Monday, March 8, 2004
After winning the Dixie 400 in 1962, Fayetteville resident Rex White has said he had to quit racing ¿to get a real job and make some money.¿ And this was coming from a former NASCAR champion.
It¿s a safe bet that none of the competitors in the March 14 Golden Corral 500 will have the same money troubles. They¿ll be battling for a $4,692,401 purse, a record for the spring event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The $4.7 million purse is a 15 percent increase over last year¿s purse and a whopping $2.7 million more than the total awards five years ago. And it sure makes White¿s winnings at the Dixie 400 ¿ a mere $10, 315 ¿ seem like a pittance.
The inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race will also offer a sizable purse, with more than $469,632 in posted awards available for the March 13 EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200.
The Golden Corral 500 weekend kicks off Friday, March 12, with Georgia Power Qualifying Day. On Saturday, March 13, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will make its much-awaited debut in the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200. The weekend culminates Sunday, March 14, with the Golden Corral 500 at the fastest track on the circuit.
Great seats are still available for all three days of intense racing action. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster or by calling the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at (770) 946-4211.
