Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL), in its inaugural year as the title sponsor of racing¿s premier series, announced a sweepstakes that will award $250,000 to one fan that correctly forecasts the champion of the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. The sweepstakes will create added fan excitement during the ¿Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup,¿ including the Oct. 31 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. After 26 races in the 36-race NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season, the top 10 drivers in points and any others within 400 points of the first-place driver will earn berths in a 10-race ¿Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.¿
Between July 1 and Sept. 5, 2004, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series fans aged 18 or older can enter by selecting the driver they think will win the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. Fans may enter online at www.nextel.com/race or www.nascar.com; by purchasing a Nextel phone at any Nextel Retail Store or Nextel Authorized Representative; through any Nextel phone with Nextel Online Service; or at The Nextel Experience, Nextel¿s 6,400 square-foot interactive fan destination at NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events. There is no purchase necessary and official rules will be available at www.nextel.com/race.
Ten first prize winners representing each of the qualifying drivers will be selected at random following the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 in Richmond on Sept. 11, 2004. Each of the 10 winners will receive an incredible fan weekend ¿ four airline tickets, four tickets to one of the ten ¿Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup¿ races, a VIP tour, a meet and greet with their selected driver, an RV for the weekend, $500 spending money and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series merchandise. The finalist who selects the driver that is named the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion will win the $250,000 grand prize.
