This spring, for the first time in the speedway¿s 44-year history, there was not a Georgia driver competing in the NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. With Monday¿s announcement that McDonald¿s will sponsor Bill Elliott for two upcoming NASCAR Nextel Cup races ¿ Sept. 5 at California Speedway and Oct. 31 at Atlanta Motor Speedway ¿ AMS will once again have a local driver represented when the series returns for the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500. Elliott, 49, has competed in 28 races at Atlanta Motor Speedway during a career that spans three decades. In his last race at AMS, last fall¿s Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500, Elliott finished fourth. He has six wins (including the non-points Winston Invitational held at Atlanta in 1986) and five poles at his home track. ¿It¿s always special to be back at my home track in Atlanta,¿ Elliott said. ¿I have a have a lot of fun competing here and many great memories. I look forward to being back there and competing for a win this fall.¿ Elliott will pilot the No. 98 McDonald's Dodge Intrepid, operated by Bill Elliott Racing. The sponsorship is a reunion of sorts for driver and sponsor, who partnered together from 1995-2000. Elliott¿s storied NASCAR Cup career includes 44 wins, 175 top fives, 320 top 10s, 55 poles and earnings of nearly $37 million. He is also a 16-time winner of NASCAR¿s Most Popular Driver Award. Tickets start at $30 and are available for Elliott¿s return to Atlanta Motor Speedway by calling the speedway ticket office at (770) 946-4211 or visiting
