SAFER Barrier Installation Has Begun at AMS
Friday, September 10, 2004
The most extensive SAFER barrier installation at any NASCAR-sanctioned speedway is under way at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Work crews began the installation process Wednesday evening and expect work to continue for approximately three weeks.
More than 7,450 linear feet of the steel and foam energy-reducing barrier will be in place for the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 race events.
The SAFER barrier system will be placed outside of all four turns, as well as inside turn 2.
The SAFER barrier system is made up of steel tubes and pads of hard foam, which are affixed to a speedway¿s concrete walls to absorb some of the energy that is transferred during a crash. Wray said the wall has already been completely fabricated, and it is being galvanized.
