When Bobby Hamilton and Mike Skinner banged fenders through turn 4 and toward the checkered flag during last year¿s inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck series debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway, it was obvious by the thunderous cheers of the crowd that Atlanta was falling in love with truck racing.
At the same time, the newly added fall Georgia-Pacific Qualifying Night has packed in more fans than any qualifying session in AMS history over the last two years with its higher speeds and sleek-looking qualifying runs.
So for 2005, AMS has revamped its spring race weekend to include both of the wildly successful new events for fans, packing another day of excitement into a weekend already chock full.
The March 18-20 Golden Corral 500 weekend will kick off with the double bill of Georgia Power Qualifying Night and the World Financial Group 200 truck race, then move to Saturday¿s Aaron¿s 312 Busch Series race, and cap off the weekend with the fourth race of the NEXTEL Cup season, the Golden Corral 500.
Tickets for the Friday doubleheader are $45 or can be purchased as part of the three-day ticket package, which starts at just $65. Gates open at noon on Friday, giving fans at least 11 hours of racing action for the low price of less than 15 cents per minute.
This wild ride of a weekend will start with Georgia Power Qualifying on Friday, March 18, under the lights, when track temperatures are cooler and speeds are pushed even high at the fastest track in NASCAR.
Ryan Newman has mastered those two intense laps, dominating Atlanta¿s last four qualifying sessions. However, with the change of atmosphere, drivers will try to knock Newman off his perch on the pole position.
But the heart-pounding action doesn¿t stop there. The evening continues with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series World Financial Group 200, which will feature top racing veterans and some of the hottest up-and-coming drivers in the country.
Last year¿s breathtaking event was chock full of drama that kept fans in rapt attention until the checkered flag.
Tickets are on sale now for all three days of racing excitement during the March 18-20 Golden Corral 500 weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. For more information, call the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at (770) 946-4211 or visit www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.
