When Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark was planning the new Mid-State RV Family Campground last fall, he decided to make it bigger than necessary for the first race, assuming the crowd would grow into the size.
Imagine his surprise, then, when all 500-plus RV and tent spaces were sold for the fall Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.
"It was such a huge success during the first race that we already had a waiting list when we came back from race weekend," Clark said. "Our fans spoke to us loud and clear, and we¿re responding by accommodating them with additional camping areas."
Which Clark and his staff are currently doing, adding 72 spaces to the Mid-State RV Family Campground. But they¿re not stopping there: AMS is also adding a brand new unreserved camping lot north of Speedway Boulevard, on previously unused land.
"Camping is probably the No. 1 area of growth for us right now, and we¿re working fast to try to keep up with the demand," Clark said. "Both the new unreserved campground and the expanded family campground should help us meet the demand that¿s already out there, but I¿m sure that¿s not the last camping expansion you¿ll see here."
The Mid-State RV Center Family Campground presented by Coachmen and Sports Coach is located north of the speedway¿s front entrance, adjacent to Hwy 19/41 and nearby the spacious new bathroom/shower facility. Spaces are on sale for the March 18-20 Golden Corral 500, with RV spaces selling for $125 per race and tent pop-up spaces for $100 per race. A waiting list is available for the expansion spaces, which will be available in time for the March 20 Golden Corral 500.
Campers in the family-designated area have a secured entrance and round-the-clock security. The new Mid-State RV Family Campground also has strictly enforced quiet time from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. The family campground is sponsored by Mid-State RV Center in Byron, Ga., a longtime sponsor of AMS and supporter of Speedway Children¿s Charities.
The unreserved campground, which will be completed in time for the Oct. 30 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500, will be located just east of Tara Field Airport on Speedway Blvd., the north perimeter road at the speedway.
