Atlanta Motor Speedway officials have added a brand new Legends series event to their line up for the October Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 weekend. The race, named ¿The Atlanta Invitational,¿ is an invitation only event for Legends racers throughout the southeast and will be held on Atlanta Motor Speedway¿s ¼-mile asphalt Thunder Ring. The 50-lap feature will be held Friday, October 28th following Georgia-Pacific Qualifying with a purse of $15,000.

Racers can qualify for an invitation by winning Pro, Masters and Semi-Pro features during the Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday Thunder and the Lowe¿s Motor Speedway Summer Shootout. Also, all 2005 State Asphalt Champions from Ga., Fla., Ala., Tenn., N.C. and S.C. will receive an invitation, plus track champions from 13 southeast tracks (Lanier, Cordele, Senoia, Albany, Orlando, Anderson, Hardeeville, Concord, Hickory, Caraway, Coastal Plains, Wake County, Nashville, Highland Rim and Sunny South). The 2005 National Asphalt Champions will receive automatic starting positions in the Atlanta Invitational.

On Thursday night, racers will vie for positions via heat races, locking in the top-16 positions for the Atlanta Invitational, with an additional 24 positions secured for the 20-lap ¿Last Chance¿ qualifying race. The ¿Last Chance¿ race will kick off the event on Friday night following NASCAR NEXTEL Cup qualifying. The top eight racers from the ¿Last Chance¿ race will advance to the Atlanta Invitational. A 25-lap Thunder Roadster race will be held between the ¿Last Chance¿ race and the Atlanta Invitational.

¿This is a great opportunity to showcase Legends racing in front of a big crowd,¿ said AMS President and General Manager, Ed Clark. ¿We¿ll have the best Legends racers from throughout the southeast competing that evening and this gives them something to focus on during their summer racing season. Many of today¿s NASCAR stars have gotten their start through Legends racing, such as Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch. Reed Sorenson, who is one of NASCAR¿s newest talents, cut his teeth racing Legends here at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Fans can see many up and coming racers before they hit it big.¿

Great seats are still available for the October 30th Bass Pro Shops 500 and all of the weekend¿s festivities. For more information, contact the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at (877) 9-AMS-TIX or (770) 946-4211.
