Hampton, Ga. (July 7, 2005) -- An F2 tornado pounded the Atlanta Motor Speedway Wednesday evening, July 6 causing heavy structural damage to luxury suites, condominiums, corporate offices and the infield area. The tornado was estimated at one-half mile wide with winds of 150 m.p.h. As a result of the storm, speedway officials have cancelled Thursday Thunder racing tonight and next Thursday, July 14. An overall assessment of the track and grandstand areas will be conducted before a decision regarding the remainder of the 2005 Thursday Thunder racing season can be made. "There wasnít really damage to the racing surface," said AMS president, Ed Clark. "We could run a race in a couple days as far as the track is concerned, but the infield, general property and suite areas that are the main concern." Clark insists the facility will be ready for the upcoming Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 race weekend held on October 28 - 30. Tickets are still available and in the interim, while phone lines are down, tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or 1-800-TICKETMASTER.
