Now Atlanta race fans will have their turn to cheer for young local talent as 19-year-old Peachtree City native, Reed Sorenson, will make his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series debut in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 on October 30 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Sorenson currently ranks third in the NASCAR Busch Series points as a rooke competing full-time in the No. 41 Discount Tire Company car. Chip Ganassi, Sorenson's car owner, announced last month that he would compete full-time in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series for the 2006 season, driving the No. 41 Target entry. To get a head start on next year, Ganassi decided to let Sorenson get some seat time at the end of the 2005 season, with Atlanta Motor Speedway being his first event.
It was very important to Sorenson to make his first Cup start at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a venue where he began making a name for himself in his racing career. In five full seasons of Legends racing, Sorenson amassed over 84 wins, beginning at the age of 12.
"I am glad that my debut will be at my hometown track, Atlanta Motor Speedway," said Sorenson. I always want to do well in front of the hometown crowd. I have a lot of friends and family members that come out to the track, and it is a track that has been instrumental in my career since I was a kid. Discount Tire Company has been a great sponsor, and I'm honored that the company wants to support me as I make the next stop in my career into the NEXTEL Cup Series."
Discount Tire Company will serve as the primary sponsor for Sorenson in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.
Great seats are still available for the October 30 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 and all of the weekend's festivities, including Georgia-Pacific Qualifying Night with the Atlanta Invitational Legends race on Friday, and the Crown Royal IROC race followed by the Easy Care 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday.
