Carl Edwards will revisit the site of his coming out party when he returns October 28 - 30 to Atlanta Motor Speedway where he made history by scoring his first Busch and NEXTEL Cup Series wins during the same weekend.
Edwards accomplished the feat in just his seventeenth NEXTEL Cup start and his seventh career Busch series start.
"Winning at Atlanta was beyond my wildest dreams," an elated Edwards said after his first Cup win. "I enjoyed every minute of it though. About two and a half years ago, I was working on my dirt car in my garage at home and so to be here is pretty cool."
Atlanta Motor Speedway's ultra-competitive racing surface provided an incredible finish in both races. In the Busch series event, Edwards made a daring move with just a few laps remaining, splitting two cars en route to his victory.
Sunday's NEXTEL Cup race continued Atlanta Motor Speedway's history of fabulous finishes with another thriller. Edwards rode the high line the entire last lap, battling with Jimmie Johnson edging ahead just before the finish line.
"I was like, man, if it's going to hit the wall, I'm going to hit it and keep digging. But it never hit the wall," Edwards said. "I got real sideways. I thought it'd slide and keep going."
The margin of victory was an incredible .028 seconds. With its wide turns and cured racing surface, Atlanta Motor Speedway is a forgiving race track and Edwards, like many other competitors, make it clear they enjoy racing at Atlanta.
"I really like Atlanta a lot. I liked the track before I won there and of course I like it even more now," Edwards said. "It's an extremely fast track that allows a driver to try different things which makes it so you can pass and to me that's a lot of fun."
Edwards early season success helped him join the ranks of NASCAR's elite, earning a spot in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup, and guaranteeing him at least a 10th-place finish in the 2005 point standings.
Looking for a repeat of his March magic, Edwards eagerly awaits his return to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the October 28-30 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 race weekend.
"It would be great to win all three Cup and Busch races here this year," said Edwards. "Plus it would give our team a boost in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup."
