A few laps around Atlanta Motor Speedway's famed high banks have caused Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue to catch a fever; the racing fever.

While at AMS last Saturday, Gov. Perdue drove a Jeff Gordon Racing School car around the 1.54-mile quad-oval. His fastest lap of the day clocked in at 164 mph.

Gov. Perdue will parlay his driving skills learned on a large track in a NEXTEL Cup style stock car onto a much smaller track, in a much tamer car against a serious competitor.

On August 3 during Thursday Thunder, Gov. Perdue will be pitted against WSB-AM Radio personality and NASCAR guru Captain Herb Emory in a no-holds-barred match race on the Thunder Ring, Atlanta Motor Speedway's frontstretch quarter-mile oval.

"I just hope he straps his helmet on tight, because my motto is rubbing is racing," Emory said.

The ninth season of Thursday Thunder, Atlanta Motor Speedway's weekly Legends racing series will come to a close on August 3 with Papa John's fan appreciation night. In honor of the Govenor's participation, AMS will recognize public safety personnel (police officers, firemen etc.) displaying proper identification by admitting them free of charge to Thursday Thunder.

In addition to the intermission race, fans will be treated to exciting Legends, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster short-track racing as well as concourse activities, prizes and giveaways.

Fans can watch Gov. Perdue and Captain Herb Emory battle each other Thursday, August 3 at Atlanta Motor Speedway during the Thursday Thunder season finale. Tickets for Thursday Thunder, Atlanta Motor Speedway's weekly Legends racing series, are available at Gate 13 (frontstretch Champions Grandstand) on event nights. Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. with preliminary action beginning immediately. Feature racing begins at 7 p.m. and concludes by 10:30 p.m.
