Drag cars will rip down pit road at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Friday and the NASCAR garages will be full of show cars, trucks, motocycles and hot rods. This Friday signals the start of AMS's "Friday Night Street Drags" series. The grassroots drag racing series will feature domestic and import divisions as well as a professional division for participants who want to "Drag to Brag." In addition to the bleacher rattling drag cars, a "Show and Shine" car show and a motorcycle show coordinated by Big Dog Motorcycles of McDonough, Ga. will be incorporated into the action. The racing competition will be heads-up, street-style drag racing on a one-eighth-mile track located on AMS pit road. "There will be no burnouts, light tree or electronic timing, just heads up drag racing to the finish line," said Brandon Hutchison, vice president of events at AMS. "This is an opportunity for both drag race and car show enthusiasts to enjoy a night out with friends and family in a safe environment." Racing will be open to any driver 18-years-of-age or older that provides a valid drivers license. Domestic cars will square off against each other, with imports doing the same to determine a division winner. The two division champions will be pitted against each other in a battle that crowns the "King of the Show." "Show and Shine" participants will be divided into three classes; 1985-current domestic and import, classic including all makes 1984 and prior and the Race Only division comprised of race vehicles, both import and domestic. There will also be a motorcycle and custom motorcycle division with trophies being awarded to the top rides in each division. The inaugural night of "Friday Night Street Drags" is slated to take the green light at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 21. Registration is located at the main tunnel entrance to AMS. Drag participants must register between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and car show participants will register between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Street drag racers must have a valid driver's license and drag race competitors age 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed 'minors release form' on file at the speedway prior to competition (forms available at the speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com). All drag competitors must wear a helmet and have operational seat belts in the vehicle. Both drag and "show and shine" competitors will be charged a $20 entry fee while spectators can enter for only $7. Children under 6 will be admitted free. In addition to the drag racing and "show and shine" car show, a DJ will be present and concessions available. Speedway rides in your car and victory lane photos will also be available.
