The first round of Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway was a tremendous success. In an effort to build on an already great event, some new policies and procedures will be implemented this Friday night, creating a safer, more fan friendly environment for both participants and spectators.

The need to make a few changes to insure quicker access in the facility for both competitors and fans was obvious, and AMS officials have taken the initial steps to remedy these issues.

The Grandstands will be open for spectators to view the racing action while continuing to allow them access to the up-close experience trackside via the pedestrian tunnel. Fans will be directed to park in the Earnhardt Grandstand parking lot while limiting vehicle access to the infield to competitors in both the drag racing and the Show-N-Shine car show.

"The fans will still be able to experience the fun of being right at the starting line, stroll the Show-N-Shine area and see the drag cars up close," explained vice president of events Brandon Hutchison. "We just needed to make it easier for everyone to get into the facility. Utilizing the Will Call entrance at Gate 15 will give the fans quicker access and reduce traffic flow in entry lanes for the drag racers and Show-N-Shine competitors."

In an effort to reduce traffic congestion, gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and car show judging will now begin at 9 p.m. Spectators should utilize Gate 15 (Will Call) in the Earnhardt Grandstands parking lot.

"We never want a participant or a fan to leave the facility because of a line," added Hutchison. "These changes should eliminate that issue."

Other changes expected this weekend include the addition of a new class in the drag race series, a Pro Street class. The new class will differentiate street-legal cars from race-only drag cars set up for the drag strip. Last week's creation of a burnout area will continue and more race officials have been added on the drag strip and the pre-staging area.

"We were simply overwhelmed last weekend," said Hutchison. "But, we will continue to improve this series each week to meet the needs of the fans."

Friday Night Drags and Show-N-Shine at Atlanta Motor Speedway continues this Friday, July 28. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. with drag practice runs beginning at 7:30 p.m. Show-N-Shine competition is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks, hot rods and motorcycles.
