This Friday with Season Championship Points Opener

Atlanta Motor Speedway's pit road drag strip will come to life this Friday night as hundreds of drag racers start accumulating championship points for the 2008 season.

The competition will be heads up, street-style drag racing on AMS' eighth-mile pit road drag strip. The series is open to any automobile and any driver, provided they possess a valid driver's license. A simple points system will be in place for 2008 and division champions will be crowned at the end of the season. Three points will be awarded for a final round win with two points awarded to the runner-up. A single point will be awarded to every participant, ensuring a tight points battle throughout the season.

After tech and tune sessions and non-point drag racing events, both racers and fans are ready to start the season.

"The entertainment value you get at AMS is second to none," Peachtree City, Ga. drag racer Phil White said. "For $20 I can race for an entire night against some incredible competition at a wonderful venue."

In addition to the pavement-pounding drag action, a Show N' Shine car show, held in the AMS infield garage area, will feature collector vehicles divided into five classes, with trophies awarded to the top-three finishers of each division. There will also be motorcycles on display and a weekly "President's Choice" award.

All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully executed minors release form on file at the speedway prior to competition (forms available at the speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com). Competitors must wear an approved helmet and have operational seat belts in the vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.

The 2008 Friday Night Drags Presented by AC Delco will run every Friday night from June 20 to August 22. Gates open at 7 p.m. and practice drag runs begin at 6:40 p.m.  Show N' Shine car show judging begins at 8:30 p.m. with the championship drag runs starting at 9 p.m.

Both drag and Show N' Shine competitors entry fees are $20 while spectator admission is only $7. Competitors can participate in both the drag racing and car show for $30.
