Summer Speedway Shuttle for Kids on Thursday Night Only

Atlanta Motor Speedway is continuing to provide family entertainment at a fantastic price as Thursday Thunder and Friday Night Drags hit mid-season form this Thursday and Friday, July 10 and 11.

This week's Thursday Thunder features a Summer Speedway Shuttle tour for children, the second of three Speedway Challenge events and the Thunder Roadsters competing on AMS' 1.54-mile track. Friday Night Drags will feature a motorcycle class in addition to the weekly drag racing excitement.

Thursday Thunder - July 10
Summer Speedway Shuttle & Speedway Challenge Cup

Atlanta Motor Speedway's summer racing series, Thursday Thunder, returns to AMS' quarter-mile frontstretch, the "Thunder Ring," on July 10 for round six of the 10-week racing series that runs each Thursday through August 7. Week six will feature Summer Speedway Shuttle tours around the track for children at intermission. The tour will include one lap around the famed 1.54-mile quad-oval in a speedway shuttle. Rides will be available for the first 150 children who sign up at the Atlanta Motor Speedway table on concourse. Children must be at least five years of age and able to ride without a parent.

In addition, week six is the second of three Speedway Challenge Cup Events and the Thunder Roadsters will compete on AMS' full 1.54-mile quad-oval track.

An adult ticket to Thursday Thunder is just $5 while kids ages six to 11 are just $1. Kids five and under are free. In addition, parking for the event will be $5 and includes one complimentary regular gate entry. Gates open at 6 p.m., heat races start at 6:15 p.m. and feature races start at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday Thunder Awards:

Atlanta Motor Speedway will present two awards each week for the 2008 Thursday Thunder season. The "Smooth Move of the Night" award is given to the driver who completes the smoothest move on the race track. The driver who has the best looking car each week is presented with the "Top Dog" award. Winners are determined by a vote of select AMS staff members.

New for 2008, Atlanta Motor Speedway has implemented the "Promoters Choice" race. Each week eight drivers who have not won a feature race or heat race are selected to race in a trophy dash.

Week five winners:

Top Dog: Melina Rolo of Cumming took the week five "Top Dog" award after repainting her No. 18 Chargers car with a patriotic theme for the Fourth of July Weekend.

Smooth Move: Thomaston's Jim Daniel claimed "Smooth Move" honors for week five when the fan favorite took his first-career checkered flag. After two racers battled for the lead in the early laps, Daniel jumped to the front at the midpoint of the Legends Promoter's Choice event to claim his first victory.

Friday Night Drags - July 11
Motorcycle Racing Featured

Friday Night Drags presented by ACDelco kicks off week four with a motorcycle class for the first time in 2008 in addition to Atlanta's best weekly drag racing action and the Show N' Shine car parade. All motorcycle competitors are required to wear denim or leather pants, a long-sleeve shirt and appropriate helmet.

Now in its second full-length season, Friday Night Drags presented by ACDelco features heads up, street-style drag racing on AMS' eighth-mile pit road drag strip. The series is open to any automobile and any driver, provided they possess a valid driver's license. A simple points system will be in place for 2008 and division champions will be crowned at the end of the season. Three points will be awarded for a final round win with two points awarded to the runner-up. A single point will be awarded to every participant, ensuring a tight points battle throughout the season.

All racers 16 and 17 must have a fully executed minors release form on file at the speedway prior to competition (forms available at the speedway or at Competitors must wear an approved helmet and have operational seat belts in the vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.

The 2008 Friday Night Drags season presented by ACDelco will run every Friday night through August 22. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and practice drag runs begin at 6:20 p.m. Show N' Shine car show judging begins at 8:20 p.m. with the championship drag runs starting at 9 p.m.

Both drag and Show N' Shine competitor entry fees are $20 and competitors can compete in both events for just $30. Spectator admission is only $7.
