Danny Lowry had to rush from work early to ensure he had time for his two-part evening agenda last Friday.
Of course he was anticipating getting married that night - he went straight from work to the Henry County courthouse with haste for his nuptials - but he was just as eager to get to Atlanta Motor Speedway's Friday Night Drags presented by ACDelco after his wedding.
A life-long motorsports fan, Lowry began coming to Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1976 when he saw David Pearson win the Atlanta 500 NASCAR Cup event. Since, he has missed only a few races at the track and has been attending Friday Night Drags since its inaugural year. So fittingly, when he and his significant other discussed Friday matrimony, Friday Night Drags was close to his thoughts.
"We didn't need to make a big deal out of it. It was the second time getting married for both of us," said Lowry, a resident of Griffin who sits atop the Friday Night Drags points standings in the Street Outlaw class. "We thought we would sneak off and do it and not make a fuss out of it. I asked if we could get down to the track afterwards and she was supportive. She's a pretty good gal."
Danny's gal is Paige Lowry and after an extended courtship, the pair decided to wed. Opting for a no-frills occasion, Lowry and his wife went straight to the track where he was warmly greeted by the AMS racing community.
"A lot of people knew we were getting married, but they didn't know when or how," explained Lowry. "When we got down to the track, all the guys were high-fiving me and asking if she had a sister."
Still excited after his wedding vows and from the support of his friends, Lowry decided to commemorate his marriage the best way he knew how, by winning the Street Outlaw class at Friday Night Drags that evening. Competing in his black 1998 Ford Mustang accented with purple flames, Lowry led his nitrous-powered machine to victory lane for the third time this year
"I had a ball that night," said Lowry, whose win allowed him to extend his points lead to a substantial five marks over his closest competition. "I was excited to be out there and to win. We're there having fun every Friday and this week was no exception."
And as for his ‘pretty good gal,' Lowry seems to know he's a lucky guy.
"She enjoys the racing and things like this, but I don't how many women would let their husband head straight to the track after getting married," said Lowry. "I was able to find a special one."
Danny Lowry and his 1998 Mustang can be seen assaulting the drag strip and his competition at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Friday Night Drags presented by ACDelco this Friday, July 18 and every Friday night through August 22.
