Double Features to Make For Exciting Finish:
With double-feature races set for each class and a number of tight points races, the 2008 season of Thursday Thunder is set to end in excitement. The opportunity for drivers to gain points and chase a championship has doubled with two races remaining, making this year's Championship Night a must-see event.
Nearly every class features a tight points race and three divisions still have single-digit points leads. In the Masters class, Zebulon's Jeff Haynie (771 points) leads Albany's Skip Nichols (764) by seven points. In the Pro division, Douglasville's Billy Fulson (755) has an eight-point advantage over Kyle Lowry (747) of Covington. With the smallest margin among the classes, Griffin's Bubba Harry (574) holds a four-point lead in the Roadsters class over Atlanta Motor Speedway president and general manager Ed Clark (570).
The Kids' Bike, Trike & Power Wheels race:
In addition to crowning class champions in each Thursday Thunder division, Atlanta Motor Speedway is looking for the fastest kid on two, three of four wheels. Children are encouraged to bring out their favorite bicycle, tricycle or Power Wheels for the Kids' Bike, Trike & Power Wheels race around the "Thunder Ring" or on AMS' frontstetch (depending on age group). This fun opportunity will hopefully be the first race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for NASCAR's stars of tomorrow.
Thursday Thunder Awards:
Atlanta Motor Speedway will present two awards each week for the 2008 Thursday Thunder season. The "Smooth Move of the Night" award is given to the driver who completes the smoothest move on the race track. The driver who has the best looking car each week is presented with the "Top Dog" award. Winners are determined by a vote of select AMS staff members.
Week Nine winners:
Top Dog: Corey Gordon took the week-nine Top Dog Award for his No. 23 Young Guns car. The Charlotte native's vehicle features a green and white paint job emblazed with Sprite logos.
Smooth Move: Amber Colvin of Tallahassee, Fla. won the week-nine Smooth Move Award Colvin completed a late-lap pass to claim the checkered flag in her heat race. The Lynn St. James Development driver had lost the lead one lap earlier, but made a smooth move to the inside the very next lap to steal the lead back from her competitor.
