Atlanta Motor Speedway's sixth week of Friday Night Drags was a highlight in parody and competitiveness on the track, as only three-of-14 Friday Night Drags classes featured repeat winners from week five.
The Domestic class was one-of-11 divisions with new winners after Shannon Shelton claimed the win in only her second time behind the wheel of a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro. Shelton, whose boyfriend Shane Ergel typically competes in the Camaro while Shelton races Super Bikes, opted to compete in Ergel's car as her bike was being repaired.
The decision proved fruitful as she claimed top honors among Domestics.
"I took my bike apart to rebuild it and it just wasn't ready," said Shelton from Victory Lane. "I was itching to get out and race, so my boyfriend and I swapped classes."
Ergel finished third among Super Bikes competing on a Suzuki Hayabusa.
Evidently enjoying her trip to Victory Lane, Shelton indicating she might not be done competing in the Domestic class.
"I don't know what we'll do," said Shelton, speculating on which class she will compete in come week seven. "I enjoy competing in both classes, so we'll keep switching it up for a bit."
Points will be awarded each night during the 13-week points season in every class except the Domestic, Truck and Sport Compact classes. Each division winner will take home three points, second-place two points and the rest of the participants will be awarded one point. The competitor with the most points at the end of the season wins the championship title on September 11. In the event of a tie, the competitor with the most wins will be awarded the title.
