Atlanta Motor Speedway will play host to a series of Accident Avoidance Workshops in November and December, providing student drivers the opportunity to simulate emergency situations often overlooked in driver's education courses.

The Accident Avoidance Workshop is a two-part program designed to prepare student drivers to respond to emergency situations. Each participant will attend a 150-minute classroom session, followed by a four and a half hour session of emergency driving simulation the following weekend.

"Parents like the fact that the lead-foots get knocked down a few pegs and (then) walk away with a tremendous boost in confidence," said Jeffery Stillwell, president of the Accident Avoidance Workshops and professional driving instructor.

Each student-parent team participates in their own vehicle, allowing young drivers to experience their own car's capabilities. Parents sit in the passenger seat, as the driver experiences first hand the effects of losing control, distracted driving and insufficient following distance in a controlled environment.

"Atlanta Motor Speedway has always supported the community, and the Accident Avoidance Workshops are a partner in education with Georgia schools. It makes for a great team," added Stillwell. "The problem is not every school has a parking lot large enough to accommodate the Workshops. That's why places like Atlanta Motor Speedway are such a life-saver, literally."

The program costs just $195 for seven total hours of training and $10 will be donated to each participating student's respective school's PTSA.

"The kids love this program, even though they rolled their eyes when they were told they had been signed up for it," said Stillwell. "(But at the end of the day) every single one of these kids is blowing their horn at me begging me to let them try the exercises just one more time."

Due to limited classroom availability in the Accident Avoidance Workshops, interested students are encouraged to act now.
