The Friday Night Drags season kicks off points racing on Friday, June 4 after three pre-season exhibition events that allowed competitors to better prepare and class their vehicles for the first week of points battles at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Providing local race fans with affordable high-speed entertainment, Friday's event will feature 15 classes of street-style, straight-line speed on the Speedway's eighth-mile pit lane drag strip and six Show-N-Shine car show divisions, plus a 50's are Forever special class. In addition, the evening will feature a Kids' Candy & Coin Scramble for Friday Night Drags' youngest fans.
Opening Night Storylines
Parity at Friday Night Drags' three 2010 non-points events has set the stage for the series' most-competitive year in history. With the three non-points events averaging more than 220 competitors per date, only three competitors have managed two wins in the three dates – 2009 Pro champion Tony Morse (Grantville) in the Pro class, 2009 Truck champion Stephen Fulton in the Truck class, and Samuel Mendiola (Atlanta) in the Pro Four division.
In addition to the more than 220 competitors on the track nightly, the first three Friday Night Drags events of 2010 have featured nearly 4,000 fans each evening and one event hosted as many as 115 cars for the Show-N-Shine car show and track cruise.
Family Fun: Kids' Candy & Coin Scramble
In addition to the fun on the track, each week at Friday Night Drags will include a Family Fun event and week four's action will include a Kids' Candy & Coin Scramble on the Atlanta Motor Speedway frontstretch. Children will be allowed to come onto the Atlanta Motor Speedway infield during Show-N-Shine car show display time to participate in the Kids' Candy & Coin Scramble. The Scramble is open to all children in attendance and allows them to sprawl across the Atlanta Motor Speedway "ball field" and scramble for free coins and candy. The event will be divided into two age groups.
Show-N-Shine Special Class: 50's are Forever
The Show-N-Shine car show special class for Friday Night Drags fourth week will be 50's are Forever. Classic car enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their 1950s show car for this special event and trophies will be awarded in the special class, in addition to the six standard Show-N-Shine classes. Each Show-N-Shine entrant can participate in a track cruise prior to drag racing eliminations.
Upcoming special Show-N-Shine classes include: 60's Muscle Cars on June 11; Modern Day Tuner Revolution on June 18; and Hot Rod Heaven on June 25.
