Double Points Night at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Friday Night Drags will likely shake up the standings, as a remarkable 11 classes enter Friday, Aug. 6's event featuring championship points races separated by seven marks or less.
Atlanta Motor Speedway's 13th week of the 2010 season will feature 15 classes of high-speed racing on the Speedway's pit-lane drag strip. With only five points races remaining and having competitors clustered atop the points standings, tension is expected on the track as competitors battle for needed points. In addition to the drag racing, the event will also include the weekly Show-N-Shine car show with six classes of show cars, a President's Choice and Student Choice awards.
Points Races Continue to Tighten as Season Progresses
While the Friday Night Drags season rapidly approaches the year's Championship Night on Sept. 10, the series' points races are becoming closer as each week passes.
Out of 15 classes, 11 of Friday Night Drags divisions feature points races where the division leader holds a lead of seven marks of less. Of those divisions, the Domestic Advanced class saw its points race tighten after Howard Wolf (Marietta) claimed the week 12 win to close on points leader Terry Bates (Locust Grove), adding the 11th class with a points race of seven points or less.
In addition to hosting 11 classes with tight points races, the average lead among Friday Night Drags 15 classes decreased after week 12's action, with the average lead falling from 6.46 points to just 6.26 points.
Of the 11 noteworthy points races, three feature ties atop the standings – the Domestic class, the Pro Four division and the Sport Compact grouping – whereas only one class, the Sport Compact group, featured a tie entering week 12's action.
