A sense of urgency will be at its apex this week at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder racing series with only four weeks remaining in the 2014 season. With the season now in its second half on the exciting quarter-mile track, Legends and Bandolero racers enter this week looking to either solidify division championship hopes or make a challenge towards the top of the standings.
Talking Rock's Chandler Smith, who has won numerous feature events in the Bandits Division this season, holds the top spot in the standings. Stockbridge's Connor Younginer has a firm grasp on second place, having put forth consistent top-five efforts from week to week.
The racing in the 15th Street Pizza & Pub Outlaws Division is expected to be highly competitive all the way to the season's final feature event. Of the six feature races in the division this season, events have been won by three different competitors, a testament to the parity of competition among the drivers. While Stockbridge's Jensen Jorgensen has collected four victories, Fayetteville's Ashton Winger and Gallion, Ala. driver Chase Purdy have also claimed feature race wins.
Perhaps the most competitive division at Thursday Thunder has been the Estes Services Masters Division in which drivers age 40 and older compete. Constant door-to-door racing among seasoned racing veterans has led to intense action with three different feature event winners. Albany's Skip Nichols, who captured his second feature victory of the year last week, holds a slight advantage ahead of Locust Grove's Bill Plemons Jr. McDonough's Scott Moseley is third in the standings.
While Oakwood's R.S. Senter dominated in the Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro Division, there is an intense fight behind him for second place. Douglasville's Will Martin holds a slight edge ahead of Stockbridge's Taylor Jorgensen. Both drivers have posted four top-five finishes this season.
Hoboken's Woodrow Mullis is also enjoying a comfortable lead in the Young Lions Division. His closest competition is Cartersville driver Zach Leonhardi who has finished in the top five of every feature race in the division this summer.
Locust Grove's William Plemons III leads the W.J. Plemons III Associates Group Insurance Inc. Pro Division standings.
Double Features in Three Divisions This Week
Fans will be able to watch twice the amount of exciting racing at Thursday Thunder this week in three separate Legends divisions. Feature events in the Young Lions, Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro and W.J. Plemons III Associates Group Insurance Inc. Pro Divisions will be run this week after they were postponed last week due to inclement weather. The Beginner Bandolero feature from last week will also be made up this week. The full night's slate of events will begin after these feature races are completed.
Each event will be completed prior to the regularly scheduled feature events this week at Thursday Thunder
Jorgensen, Smith Coming Off National Titles At Home Track
If either Smith or Jensen Jorgensen can close out the summer with a division championship at Thursday Thunder, it would cap a memorable summer for each driver. Both repeated as national champions at the zMAX Micro-Lubricant Bandolero Nationals hosted by Atlanta Motor Speedway this past weekend.
Both drivers were able to claim another national title in front of more family and friends than a year ago, when the event was held in Bethel, N.Y.
"I'm glad all of them were here to see it, they are all so supportive of my racing and it's just amazing," Jorgensen said.
Tickets for the affordable, family-friendly racing series costs just $6 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 through 11 and is free for children ages 5 and younger.
