The 18-week O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags' midpoint arrives on Friday with Week 9 of competition, but the division championship points racing is just heating up.

Tight races entering Week 9 include ties for first place in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Division, the Harding Plumbing Heating and Cooling Domestic Division and the Sport Compact Division. Plus, seven other division points races are separated by two points or less.

In the Harbin's Mechanical Services Super Pro Division, the racing has been neck-and-neck all season, and Bobby Daniel finds himself and the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina "Batmobile" tied for second place, along with Kevin Mayo in his Chevy Nova, with 10 points. After cruising to his first win of the season a week ago, Daniel likes his odds to claim another division championship.

"I think they're pretty good," he said. "I'm finally getting the car tuned in and it's going good and straight and leaving hard."

All speed and horsepower aside, the modified Lumina that Daniel drives bares a famous motif distinguishable to drag racing fans and comic book buffs alike. Decked out with "Batman" logos, the car, crew and support vehicles become a superhero squadron each Friday night, a weekly mainstay at the track.

"The guy that owns the car, Harvey, he's always had it as a 'Batman' car, and it just kind of stuck," said Daniel. "The kids like it, and it's been a good thing."

And while the superhero support staff helping him out each week doesn't include a caped crusader by the name of Robin, Daniel prefers more of a family affair.

"It's great. My wife helps me as much as anybody, and I've got a good groups that helps me with the car too," he said.

Daniel will look to close the points gap in Week 9 tomorrow night on Harbin's Mechanical Services Super Pro Division leader Billy Clevenger, who leads Daniel and Mayo by 4 points.

Next week's Week 10 of O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags will feature the Papa John's Pizza Fireworks Extravaganza, kicking off the Independence Day Weekend with one of the largest fireworks displays in Metro Atlanta. The fireworks will light up the night on Friday, July 3, just after dark and during a break in the racing.
