Just two weeks into the 2011 season of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine at Atlanta Motor Speedway, numerous drag racing classes are already showing signs that a highly competitive summer of straight-line drag racing is on the horizon.
One of those divisions is the Street Outlaw Division. Among the faster classes of cars at Friday Night Drags, it allows for slightly more modification than the sportsman class but not as much as the Pro and Super Pro Division.
Two top finishers have dominated the class so far this season. Jason Thomas of Stockbridge, driving his red and yellow 1967 Camaro, won the Street Outlaw season title a year ago and claimed victory in the Friday Night Drags season opener on April 29. His hopes of another win were denied last Friday when McDonough's Jerritt Scott defeated Thomas in the division's final elimination race while driving his red, white and blue 1969 AMX.
Given the past two races, odds are that Thomas, Scott and 2009 Street Outlaw champion Chris Stripling will be among the favorites to win the division as the summer goes on at Friday Night Drags. Thomas won the division last year with Scott finishing fifth in 2010 and third the year before.
Tolbert Doubles Up In Victory Lane
Locust Grove's Rodney Tolbert found himself in an unusual predicament at the end of the most recent night of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Tolbert was tasked with getting not one, but two vehicles into Victory Lane with him having won two different divisions in the same night.
Tolbert earned a victory in the Truck Division, driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer. He added to his spoils of victory with a win in the ATV Division on a Yamaha Banshee.
Attendance Still On The Rise
Judging by fan's support, the excitement of drag racing on Friday Nights at Atlanta Motor Speedway continues to grow. Following a record opening-night crowd on April 29, the number of fans in attendance on May 6 exceeded the number of fans present for the second week of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine in 2010.
The 2011 Friday Night Drags season will run on Friday nights through Aug. 19. Practice drag runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. MCR Safety Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:30 p.m. with the drag eliminations starting at 9:19 p.m.
All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the Speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com. Competitors must wear a DOT-approved helmet and have operational seat belts in their vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.
Entry to drag race or for the MCR Safety Show-N-Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $8 and exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
