What began five years ago as simple means to encourage racing away from public streets has exploded into one of the summer’s top sporting events in the Atlanta area. Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine kicks off its fifth season April 29.
After starting with just four drag racing classes at its inception, FND now features 19 different drag racing classes, offering racers in a wide cross-section of vehicles ranging from muscle cars and domestic vehicles to imports and motorcycles, and a chance to earn bragging rights in front of weekly crowds as large as 7,000 spectators during the summer.
More than 60,000 fans attended Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine in 2010, and they were treated to a weekly spectacle of classic cars, hot rods and straight-line drag racing on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s pit road.
MCR Safety Show-N-Shine kicks off the night in the NASCAR Nationwide Series garage where cars are judged and then take a parade lap around the 1.54-mile track in full view of fans in the pit area and the track’s Earnhardt Grandstand.
Fans then get an up-close look at the cars, ranging from customized vehicles from the modern era to some of the vehicles which commanded the roadways in the 1960s and 1970s. There have even been appearances by replica vehicles from the Dukes of Hazzard and M*A*S*H, so you never know what kind of vehicles you may see during the MCR Safety Show-N-Shine! You can participate in the car show for just $20!
Then, the track is cleared, giving way to “run what you brung” drag racing where fans may watch from either the grandstand or pit area. It doesn’t matter what kind of vehicle you have. Show up at the track with a DOT-approved racing helmet, sign a safety waiver and pay a $20 entry fee, and our officials will class your vehicle.
As for the drag racing, it’s as grassroots as it gets. In other words, we keep it simple! There’s no “Christmas Tree” lighting system or electronic timing – just a hand-drop by the race starter, and the first one to the finish line wins. At the end of the night’s elimination-style drag racing , the winner of each division takes home a trophy, allowing them to say that they won a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway!
Admission is $8 and free for kids 5 & under. Competitor admission is $20 for either Drags or MCR Safety Show-N-Shine or $30 for both events.
