Fans attending this week's Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine will be treated to one of the area's earliest and largest fireworks displays with the Papa John's Pizza Fireworks Extravaganza.

Everyone is encouraged to come out with friends and neighbors to enjoy an evening of competitive drag racing, as well as the speedway's celebration of America's Independence. The fireworks are scheduled to begin around 9:05 p.m., just prior to the start of drag racing eliminations.

Super Pro Division Enters Into a "Clash of the Titans" with Double Points on the Line

One of the top competitions each week at Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine, the Super Pro division features two drivers squaring off in a "Clash of the Titans."

Mark White of McDonough and Tony Morse of Grantville have been the top two Super Pro drivers so far in 2011. The first five weeks of the season saw White go undefeated in competition with this 1967 Shelby Mustang. But of those five wins, four of them were prior to the season points opener on June 3. Week six saw Morse and his 1990 Pontiac Trans-Am break through and snap the winning streak, giving him and White an equal number of points-paying victories at one a piece.

"Unfortunately I've broke twice, including when I won," says Morse. "Mark jumped the start and went over center line, so I still won. I haven't been able to get the car just right. Hopefully we can get it right and see what we've got this week."

White and Morse are currently tied atop the points standings. This week is crucial, as double points will be awarded to racers. Racers in each division could use the opportunity to take another step towards a mid-season championship, while others may use their run as a chance to tighten up the standings.

"The competition level should increase because of the Fourth of July weekend," says White. "There's going to be a lot of racers there to get as much support from the fans as they can."

Mid-season points championships will take place on July 8, making this week's racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway a must-see event.
