Three weeks of points racing remain in Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine, which signifies “must-win” situations for many in the points standings. Factor in double points on the line for drag racers this week, coupled with the intense racing action from week 12, and the competition should light up the pit lane drag strip this Friday night.

The series’ most recent action was highlighted by a couple of father-son battles in the final round of competition. Both the Tuner and Truck divisions featured the elder member of the household taking on the next generation of the family, with youth prevailing each time. In Tuner action, Brooks’ Chase Ponder defeated his father Vince, while Buddy Patrick of Stockbridge claimed the win over his dad Bill in the Truck division final round.

The points standings continue to tighten in several divisions as the series races towards championship night. Stockbridge’s Jason Thomas used week 12 to rebound from his disappointing showing in week 11 to take home his third win of the season, moving him to within one point of points leader Daryl Stiles from Williamson.

Other divisions saw the leader gain some important points cushioning between themselves and the rest of the field. McDonough resident Will Coots got his recent hot streak going again by earning his fifth trophy of 2012, giving him some breathing room over Chuck Poole and Andrew Pride, both of Stockbridge.

With double points awarded this week, drivers can’t afford to miss the opportunity to jump back into a points race they may have previously been relegated from. Meanwhile the leaders atop the standings will be looking to put the hammer down and move themselves closer to a championship to be awarded on Aug. 17.
