Geographical Battles On Tap for the Legends Asphalt Nationals at AMS
With racers coming from all over the United States and as far away as Canada, a couple of emerging storylines involve head-to-head competition between drivers from the North and the South, as well as drivers from the East and the West.
These drivers will be racing for an overall points championship during the Legends Asphalt Nationals at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Oct. 26-27.In a match-up of North vs. South, the Young Lions division features a tie at the top of the standings entering next weekend’s action. Ryan Shattuck of Islamorada, Fla. and Brandon DeBrakeleer from Mill Village, Pa. will square off on the quarter-mile “Thunder Ring,” along with the nation’s best Legends car drivers. The driver that finishes higher at the Legends Asphalt Nationals will be the overall points champion for the season.
The quarter-mile at Atlanta Motor Speedway should provide an excellent challenge for all competitors, with the “Thunder Ring” regarded as one of the nation’s most demanding short-tracks. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Casey Mears once drove a Legends car on the quarter-mile at AMS, and noted that all four corners are unique from one another, making it a challenging course for drivers of any skill level.
Another contest between opposite geographic locations involves the left and right sides of the United States. Pro division drivers Matt Pappa of Albany, N.Y. and Jason Irwin from Albuquerque, N.M. also enter the Nationals tied atop their standings. Like the Young Lions division, the highest finishing of these two Pro drivers will be crowned the overall points champion of the division for 2012.
