The adrenaline-rushing excitement of drag racing and the bright glare of fireworks will be on full display at Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday for the July 5th Fireworks Sparktacular at Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine.
The largest fireworks display on Atlanta's south side will continue the celebration of Independence Day as the fireworks show will begin prior to drag racing eliminations, which start around 9:15 p.m. Fans will be able to gain a full and unobstructed view of the fireworks from either the grandstands or the drag racing pit area. Parking is free and grandstand admission is $8 for adults and free for kids 5 and under.
In addition to the fireworks, the schedule includes a full slate of Friday Night Drags and the very popular Show-N-Shine car show competition, one the country's most successful grassroots racing programs. Grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m.
Craft Wins In Return
McDonough's David Craft is serving notice that anyone seeking a championship in the Pro division of Friday Night Drags will have to beat him. Craft, the defending division champion, won this past Friday in his first appearance in a Friday Night Drags points event this season. The driver of a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette, who won five final round eliminations in a row to end last season, has now won a combined six in a row. His final-round victory on Friday came over Alan Kidd, who had won the first three points events of the season.
The 2013 Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine season runs Friday nights through Aug. 16, with the Fall Stampede taking place Sept. 13 and Sept. 20. Practice runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:15 p.m. with a track cruise at 8:05 p.m. Drag racing eliminations begin at 9:15 p.m.
All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/drags. Competitors must wear a DOT-approved helmet and have operational seat belts in their vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.
Entry to drag race or for the Show-N-Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $8 with children five and under free. Exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
