The Masters Division is quickly becoming one of the most competitive groups of drivers in the Thursday Thunder racing series at Atlanta Motor Speedway this summer, and one driver in particular is rising to the challenge.

Senoia's Tina Johnson, a seven-year Thursday Thunder veteran, burst out of the gate this season, notching a second-place finish in Week 1 and following up with a third-place finish in Week 2. She currently sits in second place in the Masters Division points standings entering Week 3, just three points behind leader Mark Swan and 11 ahead of third-place Bill Plemons Jr.

With the competition so close, Johnson says, "You know, there's a lot (of competitors): Scott Moseley, Bill Plemons. Mark Swan has picked it up big time. Joey Clanton, I hear, is going to be coming out and racing with us, so that'll be huge. I've been working out and getting ready for him because he is tough!"

When asked what it would mean to her to win a championship this summer, Johnson made a somewhat impromptu officially unofficial announcement.

"Well, considering I think this might be my last Thursday Thunder, (it would mean) a lot, because I haven't won in the Legends division championship. So I would really like to do that."

Johnson will look to build on her early-season success as Week 3 of Thursday Thunder at Atlanta Motor Speedway rolls on this Thursday night.

Thursday Thunder features five racing divisions with various skill levels and competition, including Bandolero cars in the Beginner Bandits, Bandits, and Xtreme Fun on Wheels Outlaws divisions and Legends cars in the Allred Family Dentristy Semi-Pro/Young Lions and Masters/Pro divisions. The summer racing series continues each Thursday night through July 23, as drivers of all ages and skill levels compete in the 18th season of quarter-mile racing at AMS.

Grandstand tickets for the affordable, family-friendly racing series cost just $6 for adults, $2 for kids ages 6 through 11, and is free for children ages 5 and younger.
