For the first time this season, points went on the line at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine, adding to the already intense competition seen thus far in 2012. Drivers chasing a season points championship were looking to get the quest for the big prize off to a good start, while all racers were looking to take home a trophy on that particular night.
The Super Pro division saw a final round battle between two of the heavy hitters in that division, as Mark White and Bobby Daniel squared off for all the marbles in the last race of the evening. Daniel got loose following the hole shot and White cruised to his third overall victory in 2012, and second in a row. The Super Pro division now has only two winners so far this year with White, the defending points champion, and Matt Carden taking home all the trophies to this point.
Other defending points champions getting their pursuit for another championship off to hot starts with a win in week five were David Harbin (Pro), Vic Vickers (Sportsman), Ruben Quiambao (Sport Compact), Kevin Connolly (Sport Bike) and Jacob Turner (Cruiser/Dirt Bike). Despite the early victories for some drivers, the points battles are wide open and will remain that way for several more weeks.
In Truck Advanced action, Chuck Poole pulled off a popular victory in the final round with his 1986 Chevrolet. It was Poole’s second victory of the year in what has been a very evenly-matched division with top drivers like Poole, Danny Mason, Andrew Pride and Will Coots taking each checkered flag to this point in the year.
Fans will also be treated to a special pizza discount through Papa John’s Pizza courtesy of a red race car victory on Friday night. All throughout 2012, red cars going to victory lane will earn customers 50% off their online order at Papa John’s with the promo code 50RED through Sunday of that race weekend.
