Points will be on the line for the first time in 2011 on Friday in the season points opener of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With the championship season getting underway, an influx of competitors is expected on Friday. The Friday Night Drags points system awards four points to each week's final round winner, three points for second place, two points for drivers losing in the semifinal rounds and a single point for all racers which make at least one pass during drag racing eliminations.
Jersey Thunder Jet Car Part of This Week's Action
The atmosphere of speed and excitement at Friday Night Drags will get an jet-engine infused jolt this week with the Jersey Thunder Jet Car scheduled to make two runs down Atlanta Motor Speedway's pit road drag strip.
Powered by a jet engine, the car is capable of reaching a speed of 225 mph in less than five seconds, projecting more than 100 feet of flames and producing a noise deafening enough to rattle the windows in the Atlanta Motor Speedway suites.
Increase In Number of Motorcycle Classes Yields Parity at Friday Night Drags
Prior to the 2011 season of Friday Night Drags, Atlanta Motor Speedway officials added three additional motorcycle classes in an effort to balance out competition within the motorcycle divisions at Friday Night Drags.
Friday Night Drags has seen exactly that so far, with closer competition in motorcycle divisions which race down the Speedway's pit road drag strip on Friday nights during the summer. In the five motorcycle divisions at Friday Night Drags, just one, Street Motorcycle II, has seen a driver win multiple times with Cham Sadiq of Tuskegee, Ala., collecting three victories.
Fairburn's Mason Mercure, who won the 2009 Super Bike points championship at Friday Night Drags, is already seeing closer competition early in the season.
"It's going to be a tougher season. Last year, there were more competitors but it was an easier class," Mercure said. "This year, everybody is pretty much coming out with something similar to mine. This year when I win races, it's usually by about half a bike-length. Last year, I was winning by about six."
The 2011 Friday Night Drags season will run on Friday nights through Aug. 19. Practice drag runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. MCR Safety Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:30 p.m. with the drag eliminations starting at 9:19 p.m.
All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the Speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com. Competitors must wear a DOT-approved helmet and have operational seat belts in their vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.
Entry to drag race or for the MCR Safety Show-N-Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $8 and exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
