High-speed short-track racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway this summer when the 2010 Thursday Thunder season commences on Thursday, June 3.
Thursday Thunder enters its 13th season and features seven classes of door-banging short-track racing between Legends, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters. In addition to the on-track racing action, each week of Thursday Thunder will feature affordable family-friendly entertainment that includes grandstand games, nightly trivia and weekly promotions that will include kids' candy and coin scrambles, a divorcee dash and the annual Faster Pastor race between local church leaders.
With five 2009 class championships decided by 20 points or less and one ending in a points tie, the 2010 edition of Thursday Thunder is expected to feature a number of razor-thin points races.
In addition to the racing, weekly autograph sessions allow fans to meet and interact with the drivers, some vying to be NASCAR's stars of tomorrow while others have already tested the waters in NASCAR's national series. Jimmy Henderson of Conyers and Phillip Young of Dallas bring experience to the "Thunder Ring" having competed in the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series respectively, while 15-year old Legends up-and-comer Sean Rayhall of Winston hits the track as the youngest competitor in North America to win an open-wheel race.
Previous Thursday Thunder champions include current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Joey Logano and David Ragan, and Nationwide Series driver Reed Sorenson. Other current NASCAR drivers to have raced on Atlanta's "Thunder Ring" include Bill Elliott, Chase Miller, John Wes Townley, Chrissy Wallace and Stephen Wallace.
The 2010 Thursday Thunder season will run on Thursdays from June 3 through August 5, with an off-date scheduled for July 15 to accommodate the Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Adult tickets to Thursday Thunder are just $5 and children ages six to 11 are just $1, while ages five and under are admitted free of charge. Making Thursday Thunder an even better family value, exterior parking at the Speedway is free.
