With 19 racing divisions at Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine, there is straight-line racing excitement for many sizes and speeds of vehicles.
But of all the divisions racing on Friday nights on Atlanta Motor Speedway's pit road drag strip, Street Outlaw is one the drag racing series' most intense and exciting divisions, creating a perfect storm of thrills and speed that drag racing fans cannot afford to miss seeing throughout the summer.
The Street Outlaw Division features a handful of past Friday Night Drags season points championship contenders. Stockbridge's Chris Stripling, who earned the most points in 2009 within the division, has won this season's first two points-earning final round eliminations with three overall wins in his 1989 Ford Mustang. 2010 Street Outlaw champion and Stockbridge native Jason Thomas also has a win to his credit this season along with Charles Street of Griffin and McDonough's Jerritt Scott.
Thomas, who races in his trademark red 1967 Chevrolet Camaro with yellow flames and a "Mighty Mouse" decal near the car's front fenders, sees Street Outlaw as one of the more even classes at Friday Night Drags in terms of competition.
"It's got to be one of the most competitive classes out there. Everybody out here just tries so hard (to win)," Thomas said. "With the rules they have, it keeps everyone pretty tight. It's real competitive."
Stripling, who has developed a rivalry with Thomas, enjoys the close competition as well.
"It's pretty close racing," Stripling said. "The only person I'm worried about is Jason Thomas in the Mighty Mouse car."
And if a driver comes up short of victory one week at Friday Night Drags, focus quickly turns toward the next chance of taking home a win on Atlanta Motor Speedway's summer drag racing series.
"When somebody outruns you, it just gives you that incentive to come out and outrun the other guy next week," Thomas said.
Double Points On The Line For Drag Racers
This week could present a must-win night of racing for some Friday Night Drags competitors due to the opportunity to earn double points in all drag racing divisions.
While some racers could all but clinch midseason points championships with a strong showing, others could use this week to make up ground between themselves and their respective division leaders.
Currently, a total of five drag racing classes have drivers tied for first place with the leaders of four other divisions holding a lead of one point. The points system at Friday Night Drags awards four points to each week's final round winner, three points to the runner-up, two points to semifinal rounds losers and one point to all other drivers completing at least one pass during eliminations.
Friday Night Drags midseason points champions will be decided on July 9.
