Known for its numerous family-friendly events, Atlanta Motor Speedway will host one of its most anticipated special events during O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine with the Kids Power Wheel Races. The Power Wheel races will allow children ages 12 & under to race in their battery-powered car, truck or motorcycle.

The Power Wheel races will take place in the grass ball field area near the drag race starting line at 8:30 p.m. Kids wishing to participate should be in this area with their Power Wheel and ready to race following the Speedway Cruise. All participants will receive an award.

Clevenger's Heavier Car Leads Pro Division

In the faster classes at O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags, a heavier weighing car can be detrimental to turning a fast time on the pit lane drag strip. However, a higher weight hasn't impacted the 1975 Chevrolet Vega driven by Hampton's David Clevenger and his father Billy the past two weeks at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The car, which weighs about 2,400 pounds, has won the past two final-round eliminations in the Pro Division. David Clevenger's father, Billy, filled in during last week's points opener as he piloted the car to a second straight final-round win.

"The competition has gotten so much faster. (David Craft's) car probably weighs about 600 pounds lighter than mine," Clevenger said. "With what I have, I'm doing pretty good."

The Clevengers lead the division point standings entering this week. They are closely followed in the standings by McDonough drivers Eddie Chapman and defending division champion David Craft. He is the other driver to win a pro race this year, wheeling a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette to victory.

"We have a lot of fun every week," Clevenger said. "Each Friday I take off work early, go home and detail the car and get it ready to go."

Factory Street Creating Chances For Newcomers To Drag Race

Three races into the season, the newest division at O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags is already attracting its share of new and exciting competition.

With no modifications needed for a car to be placed in Factory Street, it's an ideal division for drivers new to drag racing. That has been evidenced by the past three events with each winner being a newcomer to the pit lane drag strip. Kirk Pennywitt of Stockbridge and his all-electric 2013 Tesla Model S won on opening night and was also a Show-N-Shine award winner last Friday. Other Factory Street winners have been Sam Lee of Stockbridge in a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Newnan's Steven Shafer in a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette.
