O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine at Atlanta Motor Speedway Week One News & Notes
Atlanta Motor Speedway's pit road will be transformed into an epicenter of street drag racing this Friday for the season opener of O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine.
Friday's event will green-light the 2014 schedule for the nation's most popular street drag racing series. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags rolls into its ninth year at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The grassroots racing program has introduced street style drag racing to thousands in north Georgia since its inception during the summer of 2006.
One of the more competitive divisions for fans to keep an eye on this year will be the Jailhouse Brewing Company Super Pro Division. This division has no rules confining a team's ability to create horsepower. Its format is "run what ya brung" and "hope ya brung enough!" Michael Ramsey of Canton won the division championship last year piloting an undercover dragster. He held off Stockbridge's Bobby Daniel in a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the title. Other crowd favorites include Mike "Batman" Herring of Conyers in a 1993 Chevrolet Lumina and McDonough's Mark White in a 1967 Shelby Mustang. Jailhouse Brewing Company will also present custom-made trophies to each week's Super Pro main event champion. Each trophy has been uniquely designed and produced by local artisans.
The Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Division continues to be among the faster divisions at Drags. The father-son team of Tony and Joshua Morse from Grantville won this division last year with Joshua handling most of the driving duties as his father, Tony, took on the role of crew chief. Tony Morse is also a multi-time champion at Friday Night Drags.
High-Powered Ridealong Experiences Available This Week
Spectators at the opening night of O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine will have the opportunity to experience the adrenalin rush of riding in a Super Pro Dragster.
Roy Hill's Drag Racing School will be at this Friday's opener and a couple of lucky fans will have the chance to win a ride of a lifetime.
Fans can sign for an opportunity to win a ride when they arrive at the track. A limited number of rides will also be available for purchase. The radical ride will be on display for all fans to see throughout the night.
Factory Street Added to Drags Line-Up
Eighteen different divisions will compete this season on the pit lane drag strip offering a division for any kind of car, truck, motorcycle or ATV. A new division in 2014, the Factory Street Division is an entry level class allowing racers to compete in cars that have no modifications. This is a great class for the first-time drag racer with their daily vehicle. Most entries will have little to no experience.
The 2014 Friday Night Drags season runs most Friday nights through Aug. 15, with the Fall Stampede taking place Sept. 12 and Sept. 19. Practice runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:15 p.m. with a Speedway Parade at 8:05 p.m. Drag racing eliminations begin after 9 p.m.
Drag Racing is open to any licensed driver. Competitors must wear a DOT-approved helmet and have operational seat belts in their vehicle. All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.
Entry to drag race or for the Show-N-Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $8 with children five and under free. Exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
Fans are reminded that Atlanta Motor Speedway offers a non-smoking grandstand. Smoking is allowed in designated areas behind the grandstands as well as the infield at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but not in the grandstands, concourse or seating areas.
