Speedway Children's Charities of Atlanta Distributes Grant Checks in 'Corvette Caravan'
Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) of Atlanta distributed grant checks Thursday to five local Atlanta-area recipients in a one-of-a-kind "Corvette caravan." With the help of Peach State Corvettes, SCC delivered the checks in person in a convoy nine vehicles strong - including eight Chevrolet Corvettes - before presenting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) a $10,000 grant check in a ceremony near the entrance to Gift of Lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
"Speedway Children's Charities has a primary partner in Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, said Scott Fillmore, executive director of Speedway Children's Charities. "Everything that they do for this community - that extends beyond our little world here in Henry county - is basically what we're all about. It's about helping kids in need."
The caravan, departed from Atlanta Motor Speedway and made delivery stops at Henry County Parks and Recreation, A Friend's House, Communities in Schools and Connecting Henry before returning to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the special check presentation ceremony to CHOA.
"We rely heavily on our community to help us support the things that insurance and hospital bills don't cover," said Laura Turner, community outreach coordinator at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. "Funds from our community like this help us provide those things, so we're so thankful to Speedway Children's Charities for allowing us to be a part of this."
Following the check presentation, more than 30 patients from CHOA and their families were treated to a free ride through Atlanta Motor Speedway's Gift of Lights drive-through light show.
"This is just a small part of one of the things that we have the opportunity to offer," said Fillmore. "It goes beyond just the financial aspects of support. It's also about providing an opportunity for them to get out and get away from the hospital and get into the community and enjoy themselves, especially this time of year."
Speedway Children's Charities Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1982, is committed to raising funds for qualified children's charitable organizations. To date, the Atlanta chapter of Speedway Children's Charities has raised over $1 million for local children.
